Healthcare

Tuscaloosa VA Medical Center

The Tuscaloosa VA Medical Center is a full-service VA healthcare facility serving veterans in West Alabama. Located at 3701 Loop Road East, Tuscaloosa, AL 35404. The facility provides primary care, mental health services, substance use treatment, and specialty care. Veterans with any service-connected disability rating, and many veterans without a rating depending on income and service history, qualify for VA healthcare enrollment.

To enroll in VA healthcare: call 1-877-222-8387 or visit va.gov/health-care/apply. You can also apply in person at the Tuscaloosa VAMC. Enrollment is separate from disability benefits — you may qualify for healthcare even if you haven't filed a disability claim.

Community-Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs)

Veterans in Sumter County and surrounding rural areas may have access to Community-Based Outpatient Clinics that are closer than the main Tuscaloosa facility. Check va.gov for CBOC locations serving your area.

Benefits Assistance

Alabama VA Claims Assistance

The Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs operates County Veterans Service Offices throughout the state, including in Tuscaloosa County. Accredited County Veterans Service Officers (CVSOs) help veterans file VA disability claims, appeal decisions, and navigate benefits at no charge. This free service from trained professionals beats paying a private claims consultant.

Contact the Tuscaloosa County Veterans Service Office through the Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs (va.alabama.gov) or through the Tuscaloosa County Courthouse.

Veterans Service Organizations (VSOs)

Multiple VSOs are active in Tuscaloosa and provide free claims assistance, advocacy, and community:

  • American Legion — multiple posts in the Tuscaloosa area
  • VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars) — local posts with service officers who help with claims
  • Disabled American Veterans (DAV) — claims assistance and transportation services
  • Vietnam Veterans of America

Any of these organizations can connect you with accredited claims representatives for free. You do not need to be a member to receive claims help from most VSOs.

Education and Employment

University of Alabama — Military Affairs

UA's Military Affairs office serves student veterans and active duty personnel using VA education benefits at UA. They serve as VA Certifying Officials, help veterans navigate GI Bill and Vocational Rehabilitation processes, and connect veteran students with campus resources. Veterans using the Post-9/11 GI Bill at UA receive in-state tuition covered by VA, plus the monthly housing allowance.

Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs — Employment

The Alabama DVA provides employment assistance for veterans including job search support, resume assistance, and connections to veteran-preference employers. Alabama state government positions offer veterans' preference in hiring. Contact the Tuscaloosa Alabama Career Center (through the Alabama Department of Labor) for local employment services that include veteran-specific programs.

Small Business Administration — Boots to Business

For veterans interested in entrepreneurship, the SBA's Boots to Business program provides free entrepreneurship education and resources. The SBA's Veteran Business Outreach Center for Alabama (VBOC) provides business counseling. Contact the SBA Alabama District Office for current program availability.

Emergency and Crisis Support

Veterans Crisis Line

Available 24/7 for veterans, service members, and their families in crisis. Call 988, then press 1. Text 838255. Chat at veteranscrisisline.net. Local mental health support is also available through the Tuscaloosa VAMC's mental health services — same-day appointments available for veterans in crisis.

Homeless Veterans Programs

The Tuscaloosa VAMC participates in VA homeless veteran programs including HUD-VASH (Housing and Urban Development-VA Supportive Housing), which provides housing vouchers plus VA case management. Contact the Tuscaloosa VAMC's homeless veteran outreach coordinator directly if you or a veteran you know is experiencing housing instability.

PSLF for Tuscaloosa Veterans Working in Healthcare or Government

Veterans who separated from service and are now working full-time at the Tuscaloosa VA Medical Center, DCH Health System, the University of Alabama, or Tuscaloosa city or county government are at PSLF-eligible employers. If you have remaining federal student loan debt, you may be accumulating qualifying payments toward Public Service Loan Forgiveness — which forgives remaining federal loan balances after 120 qualifying payments (10 years of full-time qualifying employment).

Check Your PSLF Progress Now

If you have federal student loans and work full-time at the VA, DCH, UA, or Tuscaloosa city/county government, submit a PSLF Employment Certification Form at studentaid.gov immediately. This tells you how many qualifying payments you've accumulated. Even if you've worked there for years without knowing about PSLF, those payments may already count — you just haven't received credit for them yet.

Financial Resources for Veterans

VA Home Loan (No Down Payment)

Any veteran with qualifying service who hasn't used their VA loan entitlement — or who has entitlement remaining — can purchase a home in Tuscaloosa with no down payment, no PMI, and a competitive interest rate. See our VA Home Loan guide for eligibility details. TVACU can help with VA loan pre-approval.

TVACU Membership

TVACU membership is open to veterans, active duty service members, and their families connected to Tuscaloosa and Sumter County. As a credit union, TVACU is not-for-profit — lower loan rates, fewer fees, and a member-owned structure mean your financial interests are aligned with the institution's. Veterans often find better rates on auto loans, mortgages, and personal loans here than through banks or dealer financing.

Connect with TVACU

TVACU exists because of the veterans connected to the Tuscaloosa VA Medical Center — that's the founding story and it's still who we serve. Whether you need a VA home loan, an auto loan, help transitioning TSP to an IRA, or just a checking account from an institution that understands the veteran community, visit us at tvacu.com or at one of our branch locations.
